Kate Gosselin wows Frauenthal crowd, addresses rumors

Kate Gosselin's visit to Muskegon Wednesday was bittersweet.

Gosselin, the star of the wildly popular "Jon & Kate Plus 8" TLC series, strayed from her script Thursday night during a scheduled appearance at the Frauenthal Center, to address rumors about her relationship with husband, Jon.

During the past couple weeks, she and Jon have been the object of media speculation and Internet rumors about extra-marital affairs. In April, he admitted "poor judgment" for partying with friends. This week, she responded to tabloid reports that she was having an affair with a bodyguard. People magazine reported that both admitted strains on the marriage of late.
The reality TV star drew hundreds to downtown Muskegon for her talk.

"This week I'm on the cover of four magazines. One is true, three are not," she said, citing People magazine as the most accurate. The statement brought nervous laughter from fans, some of whom shouted, "We love you!"

"This is certainly not what I envisioned I was signing up for. I joke about the current events but -- and this is probably the realest and rawest speech I've given -- when I see magazines in stores it's really difficult. It amazes me there is an industry that follows you around and writes stories about you. It destroys peoples' lives. I need you to know, don't believe what you read unless you hear it from that person.

"The last couple weeks have been interesting," she said with a sigh. "I had to address that, now back to the regularly scheduled program."

Just as the Gosselins invite millions into their home via the show, a casual and personable Kate Gosselin easily drew in the Muskegon audience.

Micki Sweet of Muskegon was elated that she won tickets from a local radio station. She brought her mother, Norlyn, who is a dedicated fan. "I've watched since they were babies. I don't think I've missed a show," she said.

Western Michigan University seniors Page Cioe of Muskegon and her roommate, Cari Puska, said they've allowed the show to "consume their lives."

Elegant in a flattering sleeveless dress and high heels, she sat cross-legged and comfortable on stage. Soft-spoken with lots of wit, she told of the personal trials of trying to get pregnant, the success of fertility treatments and she and her husband's concerns of being able to provide for their newly huge family, and her journey of spiritual maturity.

Gosselin gently and consistently shared her faith, which has been stretched since motherhood of multiples.

"I realized how much God must really love me to reward us with six babies, born at 29 weeks with no (health) issues," she said.

Wednesday's appearance was the last stop on her travel schedule "for awhile," she said, adding that she planned to spend more time at home. Speaking engagements, along with the TLC show, have been a boon for the family. The couple that was once unemployed, who swallowed their pride and haggled with utility companies, is now afforded opportunities they could only dream of before.

Gosselin encouraged parents, particularly mothers, to do their best in raising their children. "You can't let mommy-guilt pile up. Just do your best and never give up.
"I don't feel at all inspirational. I don't feel like an expert, I'm just a parent who tries to do my best," said Gosselin.

Dozens of people filled the Bettye Clark Cannon Gallery for a pre-show meet and greet book signing. After speaking for an hour, Gosselin took questions from the audience for about 30 minutes afterward.
